Atiq Ahmed: The Controversial Journey from Politics to Infamy

Atiq Ahmed was an Indian politician and mobster who lived from 10 August 1962 to 15 April 2023. He represented the Samajwadi Party in both the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly and the Indian Parliament. Ahmed participated in multiple elections while incarcerated and had over 160 criminal cases filed against him.

The Uttar Pradesh Police have taken possession of properties owned by Ahmed and his family valued at ₹11,684 crore (US$1.5 billion) as of March 2023. He was found guilty in 2019 of abducting a witness who gave evidence against him in relation to the 2005 assassination of Raju Pal, a political competitor. Ahmed was detained until April 15, 2023, when he was killed by three gunmen while traveling to a medical examination ordered by the court.

In Atiq Ahmed’s birth 1962 to an impoverished household. In Prayagraj, his father operated a horse-drawn carriage.

Ahmed was wed to Shaista Praveen. Five sons were born to the couple. Khalid Azim, better known as Ashraf, was the brother of Ahmed and a former Samajwadi Party MLA.

A career in politics

Ahmed first became involved in politics in 1989 after running as an independent and winning an MLA seat in Allahabad West. In the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections of 1991 and 1993, he kept his seat. As a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP), he later won the seat in 1996.

Being a Lok Sabha member

He left the SP in 1999 to take up the role of president of Apna Dal (Kamerawadi), and in 2002 he was elected to the Allahabad West seat. In 2003, he went back to the SP. In 2004 Ahmed was He left his position as an MLA in Allahabad after being elected as the Phulpur Lok Sabha Member of Parliament.

He was kicked out of SP in 2007 for shielding guys who were accused of rape in a madrasa and for the enormous uproar the incident created.

Atiq Ahmed was permitted to contest in the general elections of 2009 in India since he had not yet been found guilty of a crime. But in 2008, the Samajwadi Party ousted him, and Mayawati turned down his request for a BSP ticket. Later, he ran for the Apna Dal party in Pratapgarh elections, but he was not successful.

He rejoined the Samajwadi Party in 2014 and ran in the national elections for the Shrawasti seat. Despite having 25% of the vote, he was defeated by BJP candidate Daddan Mishra by over 85,000 votes.

Ahmed ran as an independent in the 2019 Varanasi constituency against Narendra Modi and received 833 votes.

An overview of crime

Coal was stolen off trains and sold for a profit by Ahmed, who then entered the criminal world. This later evolved toward frightening contractors seeking government contracts for scrap metal from railroads. At Allahabad, he was charged with murder in 1979, marking his first criminal record. He also made history by being the first person in Uttar Pradesh to be charged under the Goonda Act.

Chand Baba and other infamous Allahabad mafia members were close collaborators of Ahmed’s in his early years. Ahmed gained immense authority and a reputation for extortion, kidnapping, and murder following his 1990 confrontation with Shaukat his fiercest rival.

Killing of Raju Pal

Ahmed left his position as the Allahabad West MLA in 2004 to take on the role of an SP member and MP from Phulpur. His younger brother Khalid Azim ran for the position in the by-elections but was defeated by Raju Pal, a BSP candidate. Following Raju Pal’s shooting death in 2005, Khalid Azim was able to win the subsequent by-election and take the seat as an MLA .

Ahmed was identified, taken into custody, and granted bail as the principal accused in this case. Ahmed maintained his position of authority in the underground even while incarcerated.

Following her elevation to the position of Chief Minister in the state, Mayawati intensified her pressure on him. 2008 saw his submission and his apprehension.

SHUATS attack instance

Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences employees were allegedly assaulted on December 14, 2016. by Ahmed and his colleagues for acting against two students who had their exam privileges revoked after they were discovered to have cheated. The internet went viral with the footage of Ahmed assaulting the SHUATS staff member and teacher. According to Atiq, the students had been unfairly singled out. The next day, Ahmed was taken into custody. The Allahabad High Court summoned Ahmed’s criminal history on February 10, 2017, and ordered the Allahabad Superintendent of Police to detain every accused person in the case. On February 11, Ahmed was taken into jail by the police and placed under judicial custody for a period of 14 days.

Umesh Pal’s kidnapping and killing

Ahmed was found guilty in 2009 of robbing Umesh Pal, a crucial witness who gave a deposition against Ahmed in the Murder case of Raju Pal. Umesh Pal lost his life in a gunshot and bombing on February 24, 2023.Ahmed was the primary alleged suspect in this murder case The co-accused were Ahmed’s brother Ashraf, his son Asad, and an acquaintance named Guddu Muslim, a bomb maker who is believed to have thrown the bomb at Umesh Pal and has a history of violent acts. Asad, the son of Ahmed, was killed in a confrontation with the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi on April 13, 2023.

near June 2019, Ahmed was transferred from the Prayagraj Central Jail to the Sabarmati Jail located near Ahmedabad.

Six people were killed within two months following Pal’s death, including Ahmed, his brother, and his kid.

Demise

On April 15, 2023, as part of an escort police-monitored court-ordered medical examination in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) When questioned about why he hadn’t attended his son’s final ceremonies, Ahmed said in Hindi, “I wasn’t taken, so I didn’t go.” Atiq Ahmed was fatally shot by a handgun fired at close range in his head, before his brother Ashraf could finish saying, “The main thing is that Guddu Muslim.” The incident claimed the life of Ashraf Ahmed as well; it was filmed and aired live on television. When the incident occurred, police officers were encircling the brothers. The three murderers, who had assumed the identity of media representatives, surrendered while yelling “Jai Shri Ram” rather than trying to flee after carrying out the murder. After being recognized, they detained. According to Times of India, which reported on the first information report from the Uttar Pradesh authorities, “the accused told police they wanted to make a name for themselves and establish their identity in the state by eliminating Ahmed’s gang.” Ahmed and his brother were shot dead, and a Supreme Court panel observed that “someone is complicit” despite the fact that there were five to ten people present to protect them.
